Community Engagement
What is community engagement?
Good engagement is built on good communication and makes sure that we listen and think about the needs of our customers, stakeholders, and our diverse community.
Watch this short video to learn more about community engagement.
The term engagement can have many meanings. The definition given by the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) is:
“an intentional process with the specific purpose of working across organisations, stakeholders and communities to shape the decisions or actions of members of the community, stakeholders or organisations in relation to a problem, opportunity or outcome.”
How do we engage with our community?
We may engage with our community when there is an opportunity to influence a project or its outcome, to assist the City in making a decision, or when required by legislation.
How and when we do this may depend on a number of different factors.
Read our Engagement Strategy to find out more about our approach.
There are many different ways we might engage with our community, some examples include:
- Belmont Connect: our online engagement platform can host various engagement types such as surveys, interactive mapping tools and ideas boards.
- In person opportunities: this could look like scheduled drop-in sessions, working groups, or pop up stalls at community events.
- Direct correspondence or invitations to comment.
- Advisory groups or stakeholder groups.
Belmont Connect: our online engagement platform
Belmont Connect is our online platform for community engagement. It allows people that live, work, and pass through the City to participate in discussions, share ideas, and provide feedback on local projects and initiatives.
