Building legislation
The building approval process in WA is governed by the
Building Act 2011 and Building Regulations 2012. These regulate the construction and/or demolition of buildings and structures and how a building can be occupied in the City of Belmont and across WA.

All building work requires a building permit, unless there is an exemption for the proposed work under Part 5 for the Act and Part 6 of the Regulations or the City’s
Consolidated Local Law 2020.

Building classifications
The Building Act 2011 adopts the Building Code of Australia Volumes One and Two (BCA) of the National Construction Code Series as the standard for new building and demolition work.
Buildings are classified under the BCA according to the purpose they are designed, constructed or changed for – and each building can be given one or many classifications.
