What is exempt?
For some types of construction and uses or land, you do not need to apply for development approval. Please note, you may still need to apply for other types of approval such as building permits, health approvals and crossover permits.
Developments and land uses where
you do not need development approval could include:
- Any internal building works which does not affect the external appearance of a building (such as the fit-out of a building);
- The construction of a single house on a lot and any minor additions to a house (such as sheds, patios, fences, swimming pools), providing they comply with the Residential Design Codes;
- Any temporary works or land use which is in existence for less than 48 hours;
- Certain types of advertisement signs;
- A small-scale business operating from a home;
- Parking of commercial vehicles on residential land (although the vehicles still need to be registered with the City).
Please note, there are several exceptions and different requirements which apply to these types of developments and land uses.
