What is development approval?
Development approval (also known as planning approval) is usually needed to develop and/or change the use of land. In the City of Belmont, you may need development approval for:
- The construction of any new building
- Any site works on a property
- Running a business from home or changing the type of business at existing premises

Development approval is needed to make sure any new development or use of land complies with various local and state planning requirements. This includes the City’s
Local Planning Scheme No. 15 and various local and state planning policies, such as the
Residential Design Code.

Please note, developing or using certain land may also require approval under the Metropolitan Region Scheme. This could include development on land fronting Orrong Road, Leach Highway, Great Eastern Highway, or properties directly along the Swan River foreshore.
