Skin penetration and hairdressing premises
Skin penetration procedures and hairdressing are controlled in WA under legislation and requirements applicable to these industries:
The same regulations apply for home-based businesses as they would in a salon or other similar working environment.
Skin penetration procedures
Skin penetration procedures include procedures where the skin is cut, torn, punctured, shaved or penetrated in any way or where a mucous membrane is cut, punctured or torn. This includes most procedures or treatments carried out by tattoo, body piercing, beauty therapy and acupuncture businesses.
The
Western Australian Department of Communities, Child Protection and Family Support is the agency responsible for enforcing age limits for tattooing, piercings and other body modification procedures.
Skin penetration procedures are controlled in WA by the following legislation:
- The Health (Skin Penetration Procedures) Regulations 1998
- Code of Practice for Skin Penetration Procedures detail the requirements for these activities.
Running a skin penetration business
If you want to operate a skin penetration business in the City of Belmont, you will need to:
- Apply for Planning and Building approvals for the fit-out of your premises;
- Submit a completed Skin Penetration Premises notification form along with detailed fit-out plans to the City’s Health Services team for assessment. The fit out can commence once the plans have been assessed and any relevant approvals received;
- Prior to opening your business for the first time you will need to arrange an inspection by an Environmental Health Officer and receive permission to open.
Skin penetration premises receive annual inspections from the City’s Environmental Health Officers.
