City plays vital role supporting our children and youth

Last year was a challenging year for everyone, particularly for young people.

It was more important than ever to let young people know they are not alone and the City has worked hard to remain connected with them.

The Base @ Belmont continued to provide support for young people in 2020 through case management, the delivery of boredom buster packs, care packages and letters to young people, which was meaningful during the COVID-19 lockdown. Youth services staff quickly adapted and moved programs and engagement to online platforms which not only provided young people with continued support, information and activities but enabled young people to stay connected with all of the City’s youth services.

King of the Hill, the City’s annual skate and scooter competition was run as scheduled on March 14. The event was a success and occurred prior to the COVID-19 restrictions. The event attracted approximately 120 spectators and participants and was an excellent vehicle for positive mental health messaging to the youth community of Belmont.

As part of Children’s Week in October, the City held the Belmont Early Years Network’s Children’s Week Play Date at Forster Park Community Centre. This event had representatives from many organisations who supplied information to parents and activities for children. Child Protection workshops and educational resources were offered online to Community members and schools throughout 2020.

School Leadership meetings, Belmont Sister City Association and Belmont Early Years Group meetings occurred in various formats throughout 2020, as the City maintained its commitment to the community and stakeholders.
