2022 City of Belmont Art Awards Winners Announced

Perth artist Everlyn Sturges has won the 2022 City of Belmont Art Awards $10,000 Overall Award (non-acquisitive) sponsored by the City of Belmont.

Pictured with the winning artwork is City of Belmont Deputy Mayor Cr Robert Rossi and City of Belmont Acting Chief Executive Officer Melanie Reid.

Sturges’ artwork – The Shed – captured the attention of the Award judges Wendy Martin and Sue Starcken, who described it as a “Technically adept painting that meticulously documents a familiar space that many can relate to. The iconic shed holds an enduring resonance in our culture. Long associated with hobbies and industry alike, the shed holds a vast compendium of tools and materials for inventing, making, and fixing”.

The City received a record 459 entries in this year’s awards in both 2D and 3D works, including drawings, paintings, photography, textiles, sculptures, and ceramics of which included 61 entries from City of Belmont based artists.

City of Belmont Mayor Cr Phil Marks said the Art Awards celebrated the creative talents of people in the local community, as well as in the wider arts community of Western Australia.

“The City is proud to facilitate this important cultural event which aims to be a highlight of our arts calendar,” Mayor Marks said.

“The City has been thrilled to receive such a great response to the Art Awards. More than 1300 people have come through The Glasshouse doors while the Art Exhibition has been on,” Mayor Marks said.

The City also received good support for the program of public events held in conjunction with the awards, and a very successful art collectors’ night which saw more than 200 people attend on the night.

“Congratulations to the award winners, and also to all the entrants. I know I have enjoyed viewing such a wide variety of creative talents, and I look forward to next year’s event.”
