Recent heavy rains have saturated the ground conditions at Garvey Park forcing the Avon Descent event on Sunday 14 August from 11am to 3pm to be re-located to Faulkner Park in Cloverdale.
According to City of Belmont Mayor Cr Phil Marks, this year’s Avon Descent event will look a little different this year.
“We didn’t want to disappoint the community by cancelling the event, we will instead relocate the free activities including rides, stallholders, entertainment and free food to the alternative location at Faulkner Park,” Mayor Marks said.
“Recent heavy rains have resulted in Garvey Park becoming saturated and unable to support car parking for more than 2000 people registered for the event,” he said.
“While sunny conditions are expected on Sunday, more rain is expected in the lead up to the event adding to the already muddy conditions where activities were going to be held at Garvey Park,” he said.
A free return shuttle bus service to Garvey Park will run during the course of the event to ensure members of the community that are interested in watching the race can do so without parking on site. A large marquee with seating will be set up at Garvey Park and the Avon Descent race caller will be onsite to keep spectators informed of the progress of the race. The event will also be livestreamed.
The planned scenic helicopter rides have been cancelled due to the saturated ground conditions.
Free food and beverage options will be available at Faulkner Park for City of Belmont residents (while stocks last, and limits apply). Food or drink options will also be available for purchase on the day by residents and non-residents.
