Former Mayor Peg Parkin Receives Commendation in 2022 Heritage Awards

Former City of Belmont Mayor Peg Parkin received a certificate of commendation for voluntary contribution at the 2022 Western Australian Heritage Awards.

The awards recognise exceptional commitment to heritage conservation, adaptive reuse, interpretation, tourism, and promotion in Western Australia.

Mrs Parkin was praised for her outstanding contribution to the City of Belmont’s local heritage efforts. Mrs Parkin served as a councillor for 18 years from 1976 to 1994, with seven years as deputy mayor and mayor from 1987 to 1994. With this, she was an active member of the Belmont Historical Society and held the position of President for many years.

Mrs Parkin's lifelong passion for Belmont's local history is rare and inspiring. Mrs Parkin was instrumental in setting up the original purpose-built Belmont Museum in Faulkner Park that opened to the public in 1988.

Mrs Parkin has continued to share her invaluable local history knowledge and played a pivotal role in the design of various exhibits within the new state of the art Museum at Belmont Hub, ensuring it included educational hands-on experiences for the young and old to enjoy which was an intrinsic feature of the original purpose-built Museum.

The City nominated Mrs Parkin for her longstanding efforts and achievement within Belmont, and the wider community.

Her contribution models the City’s aim to respect, protect, and celebrate our shared living histories and embrace our heritage as a community.

City of Belmont CEO John Christie expressed gratitude toward Mrs Parkin’s outstanding voluntary contribution.

“Her continuous commitment to the City of Belmont is extremely inspiring.

“Mrs Parkin’s endeavours have established her as a leader in the shaping of the City’s historical efforts.

“Her passion for the City is evident; the community’s appreciation for her work is reflected in the success of the new Belmont Museum,” said Mr Christie.

The public is invited to read more about Mrs Parkin’s story at the Belmont Museum in the Faces of Belmont Exhibition.
