Abernethy Road Traffic Study and Gabriel Street Immediate Measures

We are planning for the future of the Abernethy Road area through the Abernethy Road Traffic Study and safety improvement opportunities.

The study considers current and future traffic movements and proposes safety and amenity improvements.

Initially planned for January 2025, public comment on the study and temporary closure of the Abernethy Road median at Gabriel Street has been advanced  to December 2024 due to growing safety concerns. Between 2019 and 2023 there were 48 crashes at the intersection of Abernethy Road and Gabriel Street, while there have been nine crashes at this intersection since August 2024.

This decision prioritises safety for road users and pedestrians, addressing immediate risks while also supporting the longer-term improvements recommended  in the Abernethy Road Traffic Study reports.

It is important to note this treatment is a first step in a route treatment that  considers other  intersections along Abernethy Road including Gabriel Street, Keane Street, Scott Street and Kew Street.

We appreciate that  December is a busy time for our community, and will therefore be extending the public comment period to allow sufficient time for residents to ask questions and make a submission. The public comment period is now open and will close at 5pm 2 February 2024.

This provides residents with an opportunity to make an informed submission on the study recommendations, including how proposed changes may influence their use of Abernethy Road and surrounds. Your feedback is valued and will be considered for inclusion in the final design of the recommended measures.

Road users are encouraged to seek alternative routes, and use the signalised intersections to cross Abernethy Road wherever possible in your journey.

There will be some disruption while works are carried out, we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
