Art comes alive with the opening of the 2024 Art Awards

The Glasshouse has come alive with creativity as the 2024 Art Awards are officially opened and winners revealed.

The annual Art Awards encourage the community to engage in the arts and develop new artworks that reflect the diverse voices and unique perspectives that make our City a vibrant place to live and thrive.

The Awards received an unprecedented 585 entries this year, with 300 works selected for the exhibition, including a mix of drawings, paintings, photography, textiles, sculptures and ceramics.

The jam-packed Opening Night event saw six participating artists revealed as the 2024 winners. Taking home the Overall award for the evening was Erin Knight, with their work ‘Inside’. The artwork captured the attention of the judges, who commended the quality exploration of mixed media and layering of introspective elements and symbols.

Among the highlights of this year’s awards was the special 125th anniversary category, introduced to commemorate the City of Belmont’s milestone year as a local government. The winning piece, ‘Macrandra Celebration’ created by Tania Smith, was inspired by the uniqueness of the native Eucalyptus macrandra tree and Australian landscape.

The judges noted the work captures the city's dynamic and flourishing nature, embodying its evolving spirit and vibrant character.

This year saw our youngest participants celebrate with family and friends at the Youth Awards event. The Youth Award, designed to recognise and encourage artists under the age of 18, was presented to Luke De Guzman for their work Rhythms of the Concrete Jungle.

Other award winners included:

  • Mentorship Prize – Anne Farrell

  • Highly Commended Award – Darwin Boada Hernadez, ‘Legacy of Resilience’

  • Emerging Artist Award - Shae Libbis, Sober Thoughts

  • Resident Award - Janice Oliver, ‘My Life in Ruins: Up in Smoke!’

  • Highly Commended Award - Lucy Kyaw Maung, ‘Parrot’

The Art Awards exhibition is open at The Glasshouse until Saturday 14 September, Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm.

We invite everyone to come and experience the diversity and creativity that make our City a place of opportunity. Many of the works are available for purchase, offering a chance to support local artists and bring a piece of City of Belmont’s unique culture into your own space.

We would like to thank our sponsors for the 2024 Art Awards, Zenith Energy, The Event Mill, Rocky Bay and Rotary Club of Belmont.
