Thank you to all our residents who have successfully made the switch to the new three bin system and are using all three of their bins correctly.
The new bin system started rolling out early this year and we have seen some encouraging early results. Over 1,500 tonnes of FOGO has been diverted from landfill.
We know that change takes time. There are some households with the new system who haven’t fully made the switch yet and we are finding things creeping into the wrong bins. Here are some common issues that cause trouble for our waste collection:
- Plastic bags of waste in the lime green FOGO bin.
- Recyclable materials put in plastic bags (recyclables shouldn’t be bagged).
- FOGO materials in plastic bags (not the compostable ones supplied).
When bins are emptied, cameras in the truck may pick up when waste has not been sorted correctly. The City's waste contractor Veolia may issue contamination letters to these households.
If your household receives a letter, please be aware that your bins may not be collected until the issue is resolved.
We want to keep contamination rates low and keep general waste out of the FOGO and recycling bins.
Contamination results in lower quality recovered materials, more land fill and higher waste processing costs. Sorting your waste correctly is the key to keeping the contamination rate low. For more information on sorting your waste visit our
three bin system page.
If you have run out of compostable liners
, you can collect two free rolls each year using the tokens in the printed version of the
Waste and Recycling Guide. Simply present your token and proof of address at the City of Belmont Civic Centre or Ruth Faulkner Library.
Please note, if you live in an apartment or multi-unit residence, you may not have the new three bin system yet, but it will be coming in the future.
If you are finding the new bin system challenging, we are here to help. Please call one of our FOGO crew on 9477 2222 or email
fogo@belmont.wa.gov.au for advice.
