Belmont Museum Gets in the Game
The City of Belmont has officially opened its latest exhibition at Belmont Museum, shining a light on local sporting heroes and the achievements that have defined the City’s sporting history.
Featuring treasured artefacts from iconic sports figures such as cricket legend Dennis Lillee and Olympian Max Binnington, the exhibition also brings to life the stories of the many sporting clubs that have played a key role in the City’s story.
The inspiration for the exhibition came from a conversation with local community member John O’Rourke, who recalled the tale of a football trophy dating back to 1922. Mr. O’Rourke not only helped locate the historic trophy but also encouraged the Belmont Junior Football Club to donate it to the museum, laying the foundation for an exhibition that has been a year in the making.
Mayor Robert Rossi noted that what began with a single sporting artefact has grown into a comprehensive celebration of the passion, dedication, and memories that sport brings to the City of Belmont.
“With our newest exhibition we shine a light on the athletes, the supporters and the unforgettable moments that have shaped our sporting story.
“This exhibition isn’t just about trophies or records, it’s about people. The volunteers who make every game possible, the kids kicking a ball in the park and the lifelong memories made on sidelines, in stadiums and on ovals across our City,” said Mayor Rossi.
The exhibition’s opening was timed to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the Belmont Hub, home to both Belmont Museum and Ruth Faulkner Library.
To mark the occasion, the City hosted a range of activities at Belmont Hub that encouraged residents and visitors to get active while learning.
The exhibition is open to the public and is free for anyone to enjoy. Belmont Museum is located on the first floor of Belmont Hub on Wright Street, Cloverdale.
