In Western Australia, removing or damaging private trees may require development approval.
Our policy sets out the criteria under which removing or damaging a private tree is exempt from needing development approval. Where development approval is needed, it outlines the requirements of a development application and our assessment criteria.
We understand that trees play an important role in shaping the character and liveability of the City of Belmont. This policy prioritises tree retention while allowing for their removal on appropriate planning or development grounds. Generally, the policy introduces exemptions for small trees while requiring development approval for larger, mature trees.
Residents can use our tree exemption self-assessment form to determine and document if removing or damaging a tree is exempt from needing development approval.
The policy will be in effect from Thursday 6 August 2026.
