City of Belmont's Kidz Fest makes family fun accessible

The City of Belmont’s much-loved Kidz Fest is returning to Garvey Park on Saturday 15 November with a full day of free activities, entertainment and creativity for children aged 3 to 12 years.

This year’s event includes a special sensory-friendly session from 9am, created for families who would benefit from improved access and inclusion.

Kidz Fest will then open to the wider community at 11am for a full day of family fun, including circus performances, creative workshops, immersive storytelling, rides, bouncy castles, sensory play spaces and a magical unicorn experience.

Mayor Robert Rossi said that Kidz Fest was one of the highlights for local families on the City’s annual calendar of events.

“Kidz Fest is one of our much loved local events and it’s wonderful seeing the families return each year and their kids grow a little taller each time.

“It is a great opportunity for our community to come together and spark creativity in our younger residents,” he said.

The introduction of a new sensory-friendly session aims to make the event welcoming for everyone and is supported by $45,000 in Lotterywest funding to enhance accessibility and inclusion.

“Kidz Fest is about creating joy, connection and opportunity for every child,” said Mayor Rossi.

“By introducing a sensory-friendly session, we’re making sure more families can enjoy the fun in an environment that feels comfortable and inclusive.”

The sensory accessible session was developed in consultation with People With Disabilities WA, Valued Lives, Down Syndrome WA and independent disability consultant, Ben Sgherza. It offers a sensory accessible experience, smaller crowds and dedicated support staff, along with AUSLAN interpreters, accessible pathways and a quiet space for families needing a break.

Lotterywest Acting CEO Lorna Pritchard said making sure more Western Australian families can participate in community events just like Kidz Fest is a key focus of Lotterywest’s grants program.

“This year, we are proud to support a sensory-friendly session at Kidz Fest which will ensure all families feel welcome and can enjoy the fun-filled program that is on offer,” Ms Pritchard said.

Places for the sensory-friendly session are limited and available to families who would benefit from this experience. Registration is free and essential via the City’s website.

Families are encouraged to consider public transport and make use of the free accessible shuttle buses to Kidz Fest that will run from Redcliffe Station throughout the day.
