Changes are being introduced to what belongs in your Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bin.
This financial year, local governments across Western Australia have begun rolling out some updates to items accepted in Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bins.
These changes have been developed collaboratively through the WALGA's Consistent Communications Collective with representatives from local government, waste industry and State Government. The updates aim to create cleaner compost and improve the environmental outcomes from FOGO.
Under the updated guidelines, the accepted items have been simplified to:
This means some items previously accepted in FOGO bins, including tea bags (loose tea leaves can still go in FOGO), tissues, paper towels, pet waste and compostable takeaway packaging, should now start going in your general waste bin.
The way your FOGO service operates isn't changing. Your bins, collection schedule and collection days all remain the same. The only change is what goes in your FOGO bin.
We know it can take time to adjust, and we'll share information over the coming months to help make the transition as simple as possible.
