Following the success of the 2024 trial, Winter Night Lights is returning to light-up four sporting reserves between May and September this year.
The Winter Night Lights initiative is designed to encourage residents to stay active during the winter months when the sun sets earlier.
Flood lights at popular sporting reserves are turned on at sunset to extend usage hours and provide a more accessible, safe space for the community to exercise.
The initiative was trialled between May and September 2024 at five sporting reserves, followed by a period of community consultation and data evaluation.
User and activity data collected during the trial showed a notable increase in activity at the reserves when compared to the same period in 2023.
The trial also received strong support from surrounding residents and park users, with 98% of community respondents supporting the initiative. Feedback noted a strong focus on increased feelings of safety and exercise opportunities.
As part of this year’s initiative, training lights will be turned on from 5:30pm to 8pm, Monday to Friday at the follow reserves:
During formal sports training sessions, please use areas that are not in use by our local sporting clubs.
