Belmont Sister City student exchange program
A Sister City program allows for people from different backgrounds and locations to learn about another culture as they build friendships, explore economic partnerships, exchange ideas and share experiences.
The City of Belmont has shared a Sister City relationship with the Special Ward of Adachi-ku in Tokyo, Japan since October 1984.
At the heart of this relationship is the annual Student Exchange Program. Every year, in this program:
- Students from the City of Belmont travel to Adachi in early January to experience Japanese culture and customs;
- Students from Adachi-ku visit the City of Belmont in July-August. They explore the City and the wider Perth region and participate in cultural tours, school visits and sightseeing;
- Japanese students are hosted by local Belmont families. Living with local families helps students to experience an authentic Australian way of life and offers them an opportunity to improve their English language skills.
The City of Belmont works in close partnership with the Belmont Sister City Association to create well-planned and well-managed tours for our Sister City students.
Our exchange program is currently on hold due to COVID-19 but we continue to stay in close contact with our Sister City partners in Adachi-ku. We look forward to resuming the exchange program in the future.
