Protect our waterways
As a resident or local business, you can help to prevent the City’s wetlands and waterways from becoming polluted.
Here are some actions you can take to help to protect the City’s waterways:
- Use phosphorous-free products to wash your car, caravan, boat and/or trailer on your lawn or at a specialised car wash – not in your driveway or on the road;
- If your business runs a vehicle wash-down bay or other wash-down facility, this must be approved by the City for water and waste management reasons;
- If you own a dog, make sure you clean up after it and dispose of waste in bins provided or at home;
- Minimise the use of fertiliser by following the fertilise wise guidelines;
- Try to reduce the amount of nutrient-hungry lawn you have by having a Waterwise native garden and using your lawn clippings or mulch in your garden;
- Do not store green waste or horse manure on the verge – instead, dispose of it appropriately or reuse it as compost;
- Keep any bins, “skips”, or waste storage areas clean, covered and closed to prevent items entering the environment.
Please note, it is an offence to allow waste water from a business to enter the City’s drainage network or the environment. For more information, please see our page on
waste water treatment.
