Pollution
Air Pollution
Air pollution can be harmful to our health, particularly for those people already at risk because of their age or existing health problems. Industrial emissions, dust and woodsmoke can be hazardous to our health.
Wood smoke, created from burning firewood and other materials in wood heaters, such as fireplaces and wood stoves, are a major source of air pollution, particularly during cold winter nights.
Backyard Burning
Backyard burning is prohibited in the City of Belmont to prevent air pollution and associated health concerns. Backyard fires create unnecessary smoke which results in air pollution and smoke complaints.
Some alternatives to backyard burning include:
- Ordering a skip or bulk green bin
- Mulching green waste at home
- Taking green waste to other approved facilities.
