Starting a food business
Encouraging new businesses and innovation is important to the City of Belmont. If you are considering starting a food business, the City has a range of information to help guide you through the approvals process.
Food trucks and mobile food vehicles
Food trucks are often a popular attraction at events, festivals and local activities in the City of Belmont.
If you would like to trade from a food truck or mobile food vehicle business, please read the
City’s Mobile Food Trader Guidelines which direct the location, operation and regulation of mobile food vehicle trade within the local area. You can apply for approval for an individual food truck or as a collection of food trucks which operate in a coordinated manner.

What happens when you apply for approval
Here is a summary of the process which follows your application for approval:
- The City’s Health Services team will assess your registration form and supporting documentation such as detailed fit out plans for the food premises;
- Once this process is complete, the City will send you a letter of assessment along with the assessed plans;
- If your application is approved and all other approvals are in place, at this stage you can proceed with the construction and fit-out of the food premises;
- Once your construction and fit-out are complete, the premises cleaned and ready to operate, a Food Premises Fit Out Inspection can be arranged.
Following a successful fit-out inspection, your food business will be able to trade and you will be issued with a Certificate of Registration.
