Be smart and be responsible
You can take some simple steps to keep your car, home and property safer, in the City of Belmont or anywhere you travel. Here are some tips to help you stay secure.
Keep your car safe
Do not leave any valuables visible in your car, even for a short time. Never leave children or pets unattended in your car.
When you leave your car in any car park, make sure the doors and windows are all closed – then lock your car. Try to park in well-lit areas and always be aware of your surroundings.
Keep your handbag, phone and personal belongings safe
If you carry a handbag, keep it closed and do not leave it unattended in your trolley, in your car or anywhere in a public place.
Keep your purse, wallet and mobile phone close to you at all times when you are out and about. Be mindful of your surroundings and beware of anybody who may be acting suspiciously or who tries to distract you.
Register for approved apps which could help you to find your phone if it went missing. Most phone providers have an official app, such as ‘Find My iPhone’.
Keep your home safe
Whenever you leave your home, make sure all doors, windows and access gates are locked. Consider investing in a house alarm or surveillance system.
If you are going away, ask your neighbours or someone you trust to collect your mail and put your bins out. Do not advertise that you will be away, for example by posting your travel dates and plans on social media. Be aware that any social media posts you create while you are away could be alerting criminals to the possibility your house is empty.
You can lodge a request for the City’s Belmont Community Watch to conduct patrols on your street while you are away, for added peace of mind.
