The City of Belmont is committed to being as water-efficient as possible and encourages all residents and businesses to do the same. Here are some ways you can save water inside and outside your home.

How to use save water indoors

It is estimated that around 22% of a household’s total water use is in the shower. Inside your home, you could:
 

• Make sure your showerhead is water-efficient and your taps, toilets and other water fixtures are Waterwise (WELS rated);
• Try to reduce your showering time – this could save you on the cost of water-heating too;
• Check regularly for any leaking taps or pipes and fix these as soon as possible, or book a licensed plumber to help you.

How to use water wisely in your garden

Please remember that a full winter sprinkler ban is in effect between 1 June and 31 August every year. To save water in your garden throughout the year, you could:
 

• Make sure you stick to your watering days;   
• Program your sprinklers to deliver water efficiently – such as in the early morning or evening to reduce evaporation loss;
• Design your garden to group plants with similar watering needs together;
• Choose water-efficient native plants or plants which use less water.

How to use water wisely if you have a bore

If you have a garden bore, the watering tips above also apply. To be a responsible bore user, you can:
 

• Get advice on the best pump size and pumping rate for your bore when installing – as over-pumping can cause problems;
• Keep your bore clean and in good working order – never flush waste down a borehole; 
• Find the right location to situate your bore on your house block – and keep your bore more than 500 metres from any wetlands;
• Adjust your watering time based on the season and rainfall patterns;
• Keep your bore records secure with your house plans for future reference or for your property’s next owner – your driller should give you a ‘bore log’ indicating depth, soil composition, yield and pump make and model; 
• Maintain your bore, and its external housing, in a safe manner.

If you decide to decommission your bore, make sure you have it professionally capped to make it safe and prevent contamination.
